What is ArtWorks?
Based on the very successful Gallery 37 in Chicago, ArtWorks is an arts-based job-training program. Professional artists work with youths for six weeks in an apprentice situation to teach skills in the arts. On-going interactions create mentoring relationships and young people learn essential, important skills that are transferable to the future workplace.
ArtWorks goals include:
- providing meaningful training in the arts for high school students
- creating a mentoring program between youths and professional artists
- fostering cultural awareness and understanding through the arts
- enhancing public awareness for the importance of the arts/arts education
- establishing the arts as a credible vehicle for job training
Student apprentices from the Cleveland area are selected to participate in ArtWorks based on a competitive application process. Teaching artists are selected from multiple disciplines including drama, dance and visual arts. Several times each week, volunteers from business that use the arts in unique ways speak at lunchtime on the various ways that skills in the arts are desirable to employers and applicable to business settings.
ArtWorks is hosted by Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio and generously supported by Forest City Enterprises, Inc., the citizens of Cuyahoga County and the Board of County Commissioners, Cleveland Airport System, Key Foundation, Dominion Foundation, and FirstEnergy Foundation.
